When James Macaree lines up for the Great North Run this September, he’ll be taking on much more than 13.1 miles.
The Ring Stones Executive Director is raising money for Derian House Children’s Hospice, a charity that has played a significant role in supporting his family over the last few years.
James and his family were first introduced to Derian House in 2020 after the birth of his son Jake, who was born with a rare genetic brain condition.
“Our introduction to Derian House came in 2020 when our son Jake was born with a rare genetic brain condition,” James explains.
“Through Derian House, we were able to experience many things that we thought were not possible for both Jake and us as a family, which are precious and treasured memories for us now.”
The support continued throughout Jake’s life and during the family’s most difficult moments.
James added: “In August 2022, Derian was able to support us in the most challenging of times providing care, support and a resting place for Jake, both before and after he passed away.”
Today, Derian House cares for more than 400 children and young people across the North West, providing respite and end-of-life care, free of charge. The charity costs more than £6 million a year to run, with most of its funding coming from donations and fundraising.
For James, giving something back is an easy decision: “Derian House never closes its doors and ensures that they are there 24/7 for families and children, but this can only be achieved through their supporters.”
This year’s Great North Run will be the latest challenge he has completed in support of the hospice. Previous fundraising efforts have included taking part in the Calico Group Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 2023 and an overnight climb of Snowdon last year.
Together, those events have raised nearly £20,000 for Derian House, which makes a huge difference for the charity.
“These fundraisers have collectively achieved nearly £20,000 overall, which is amazing and helps families to continue to be supported like we were and still are to this day,” James said.
While fundraising for Derian House has become a regular part of James’ calendar, the Great North Run presents a challenge of its own.
Running is not something the Ring Stones ED particularly enjoys, but that hasn’t stopped him putting in the miles. Over the past 16 weeks, he’s been training three or four times each week as he prepares for the starting line in Newcastle.
